There is no wrong way to give birth
There is no wrong way to give birth. This is a sentence I think often and say out loud for time to time. What it means to me is that how you choose to give birth is your choice. I feel like my job as a Doula and a Midwife is to follow your lead, support you and hold space for you. I trust that you know what you need and I will be here to help you to the best of my abilities.
Sometimes I think that because I teach Hypnobirthing and attend home births people assume that I think birth has to be a certain way. But I truly don’t. My passion is not for one kind of birth, it’s for birth in general. I want the couple who’s c-section birth I attend to be as seen and listened to as the couple who’s home birth I attend. I want the person giving birth to feel respected, informed and listened to. Yes, I love physiological births because I find it so impressive what our bodies can do, this is what drew me to midwifery to begin with. But not everyone is the same, and I am here for that. If you want an epidural, I am here for it. If you want an induced birth, I’m here for it. If you want a water birth, I am here for it. My job as a Midwife is not to judge your choices. To inform and take responsibility for the medical interventions when needed, yes, but never to judge you.
When I say there is no wrong way to give birth, I mean it. I hope that all people that give birth can do so on their terms and in the way they imagine. Physiological birth isn’t something you should feel you have to strive for just because there is so much talk about it. If you want to have a physiological birth then do it because you want to, not anyone else. And if down the line you change your mind and want medical pain relief then that’s okay too. It’s okay to change your mind! It’s okay to try one way and if that way doesn’t work then it’s okay to try something else. You get to decide when it comes to your body, your birth, your baby. Listen to your instincts, how do you want to give birth?
